Patient Attendant vs Home Nurse: What's the Difference?

Booking the wrong category costs money or, worse, safety. Here is a clear comparison.

What a patient care attendant does

An attendant provides non-clinical, hands-on support: bathing and grooming, dressing, feeding, diaper changes, help with walking and transfers, positioning, companionship and reporting changes to the family. For many elderly and recovering patients, this is exactly the support required.

What a qualified nurse does

A nurse is trained and licensed to perform clinical procedures: injections and IV infusions, sterile wound dressing, catheter and Ryle's tube care, tracheostomy suctioning, nebulisation, vitals interpretation and medication administration under a doctor's prescription.

How to decide

The test is simple: if the day involves a clinical procedure or an unstable condition that needs interpretation, you need a nurse. If it involves daily living support and supervision, an attendant is appropriate and more economical.

  • Choose an attendant for bathing, feeding, mobility and companionship
  • Choose a nurse for injections, wound care, catheter or tube feeding
  • Some families combine both — an attendant by day, nurse visits for procedures

Combining the two

A common and cost-effective arrangement is a full-time attendant with scheduled nurse visits for dressings or injections. Our coordinators will suggest this openly when it fits, rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.
