Home Nursing Charges in Kolkata: 12-Hour vs 24-Hour Care

Round-the-clock care is not always necessary. Here is how to decide between a 12-hour shift and 24-hour nursing at home.

What a 12-hour shift covers

A 12-hour shift suits patients who are stable but need supervision, medication timing, dressing changes, mobility support and vitals monitoring during a specific part of the day. Many families choose a day shift while the household is at work, or a night shift when a patient is restless, disoriented or at risk of falls after dark.

Handover is what makes a 12-hour arrangement safe. Our nurses maintain a written log of medication, intake-output and observations, so the family or the next nurse always starts with a full picture.

When 24-hour nursing is the right call

Round-the-clock nursing is appropriate when a patient cannot be left unattended at any point: tracheostomy or ventilator dependency, frequent suctioning, unstable vitals, advanced dementia with wandering risk, or the first days after a complex surgery or stroke.

It is also the safer choice when the household has no adult available at night, since an emergency at 3 a.m. needs a trained response, not a phone call.

How the two are priced differently

A 24-hour arrangement is not simply double a 12-hour rate. It depends on whether care is delivered as a live-in nurse with defined rest periods or as two rotating shifts, and on whether the family provides meals and a place to rest. Night duty is generally priced above day duty.

  • 12-hour day shift — stable patients, daytime supervision and procedures
  • 12-hour night shift — fall risk, night confusion, night-time medication or feeds
  • 24-hour live-in — continuous presence with structured rest periods
  • 24-hour rotating shifts — highest-dependency and critical patients

Start smaller, then adjust

Most families do not need to commit to the maximum from day one. A common and sensible approach is to begin with the shift that covers the riskiest window, review after a week, and scale up or down. We support that flexibility, including switching from short-term nursing to a longer plan if recovery takes more time.
