What Does a Home Nurse Do for a Bedridden Patient?

Bedridden care is detailed, repetitive and skilled work. Here is what a trained nurse actually does through the day.
Positioning and pressure injury prevention
The most important routine for a bed-bound patient is regular repositioning, usually every two hours, with pillows supporting bony areas. Nurses inspect the sacrum, heels, hips and elbows at each turn for early redness, keep the skin dry, and escalate any breakdown before it becomes a deep wound.
Where appropriate, an air mattress or hospital bed with adjustable height makes both prevention and daily care considerably safer for the patient and the caregiver.
Feeding, hydration and medication
Nurses manage oral feeding for patients who can swallow safely, and Ryle's tube feeding where prescribed, following the volumes and timings set by the treating doctor. They record intake and output, administer medication on schedule, and watch for aspiration risk, constipation and dehydration — three of the most common avoidable complications in bedridden patients.
Hygiene, catheter and bowel care
Daily sponge baths, oral care, hair and nail care, perineal hygiene, diaper or catheter management and bed-linen changes are part of routine nursing. Catheter care in particular needs correct technique to avoid infection, which is why it should be handled by a trained nurse rather than an untrained helper.
Monitoring and family support
Vitals are charted through the shift, and any change in temperature, breathing, alertness or urine output is reported promptly. Just as importantly, a good nurse teaches the family safe transfer techniques and warning signs, so care continues correctly between shifts.
